How to have Shareomatic! social bookmarking service under wordpress.com blog posts

21 10 2007

SHAREOMATIC! is a social bookmarking service available for wordpress bloggers! YAY!

Sharomatic! - social bookmarking service for wordpress

BUT NOOOOOOOOOO! WordPress as in wordpress.org, not .com! Shareomatic! has this plugin for wordpress.org blogs! :( But I refuse to be defeated by orgers just like that. So I am gonna figure out if the only other option that Shareomatic has – the bookmarklet - can save my day.

And sure enough, the Shareomatic bookmarklet is the solution for wordpress.commers.

Just drag the bookmarklet in your browser’s toolbar. Now after publishing the post view your post. Make sure the address bar shows the blog post url, not the blog url! If you have been reading my other posts on social bookmarking for wordpress.com, then you probably know this procedure by heart now! :D

Now click the Shareomatic! bookmarklet. You will be taken to the Shareomatic site and two fields will be magically prepopulated with your blog post url and title!

Copy the url from the address bar.

Now come back to your blog admin and link the url to the Shareomatic button!

Some features of Shareomatic!

Registration is not required for your reader to be able to use it. Having an acoount will help her/him get the services s-he use to be preselected. Shareomatic! makes automatic submission to multiple bookmarking sites a breeze! Desired sites are accessible from the same window, one after one in a row. Shareomatic! keeps track of new bookmarking sites and adds them to its services. Currently there are 79 social bookmarking sites in their list and they urge the user not to hesitate if another service needs to be added!

By the way, don’t bother looking for the button in the site – it’s not there. There is some sort of a button available if you download the plugin. But that too is not a static button and so can’t be utilized by us!

I have seen how the button looks in another blog that has it. I have done all the work for you so that it will be easy for you in case you want to try it out first-hand!

Hmmm…according to the plethora of rss feeds I’ve to read everyday, putting social networking icons, inline, before/after blog posts are becoming an annoying cliché. A post describing this situation is available at Signal Vs Noise, the team-blog of 37signals, you should read it :)

BTW, thats not much of a bookmarklet is it? I don’t see no javascript snippet out there…Now here’s a must’ve bookmarklet for web-authoring, and its over a 100 lines worth.

I do use a different bookmarklet for social-bookmarking my own posts though (just owing to the lust for some link-love), here it is (hoping WordPress doesn’t auto-format the markup).

hello naser!
thanks for your feedback! i have read that post already :D
but i must say, it is quite a debate. some will rightfully argue that having a visible button under the posts is a good reminder! and i tend to like that argument.

as for the worth of shareomatic bookmarklet, it only interested me as an option for wordpress.commers for having a bookmarking option under the posts. as long as that happens, i don’t really mind if it is not a great bookmarklet js-wise!

unfortunately, the must-have bookmarklet is delinked! if you visit this post again, please paste it again!

i don’t know what happened to the last url. if i guessed it correctly, you were referring to my socializer bookmarking post, right? well, unfortunately, wp did
mess it up, cos it has a js element – all js in the user-end is stripped by wp for security reasons!

and one last thing, my akismet (spam-slayer) is designated to moderate a comment if it contains more than one url!

you are more than welcome to share as many url’s as you like. only one url per comment please! sorry, have to keep spammers at bay!
