How to use the Addthis bookmarklet to automatically create social bookmarking links for wordpress.com blog posts

ADDTHIS is a handy service that creates multiple social bookmarking links for individual blog posts.

How to use Addthis for worddpress.com blogs

It is possible to use Addthis for wordpress.com blogs!!!

Unfortunately, none of the codes Addthis supplies to get the job done is capable of creating links for individual wordpress.com blog posts. You can learn about the Addthis code problem in detail here.

:) Fortunately, I have created an Addthis bookmarklet which automatically gets the job done.

To carry out the tutorial, you need Firefox and you also need the following link:
Addthis social bookmarking bookmarklet for wordpress.com blog posts

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Click the above link and open the file.
  2. Copy the code.
  3. Paste the code in a Notepad file.
  4. Name the Notepad file AddthisBookmarklet and save it as an html file. Just write AddthisBookmarklet.html in the “Save” dialogue box and the html file will be created!
  5. Open your newly created html file AddthisBookmarklet in Firefox. You will find the hyperlinked words Addthis.
  6. Place the cursor over the link. Drag and drop the link in the “Bookmarks Toolbar Folder” of your Firefox. A new bookmarklet will be created! It will say Addthis.

So how do we use the nifty bookmarklet?

  1. Create a new post, view it in Firefox. Make sure you see the permalink of the post and not the blog url in the address bar!
  2. Now simply click the Addthis bookmarklet and the needed social bookmarking link for that post will be generated!
  3. Copy the newly generated url from the address bar.
  4. Go back to the “Edit” mode of your post, paste the Addthis button under the post and link the button to the copied url.
  5. Save and view the post. If you click the Addthis button under your post, you will see that addthis has generated a url for that blog post!

You will find the Addthis buttons here. Choose one that suits your needs.

There are other third-party sites like Addthis that don’t work for wordpress.com blogs by default. But I have figured out roundabout solutions. You might like to check out these options as well – socialmarker, Addtoany, Shareomatic, socialposter, Feedpass, socialsubmit and socializer.

.

:!: Wordpess support has a tutorial that tells you how to use addthis for wordpress.com. But the instructions didn’t work for me. So I don’t recommend it for you.

:!: Do you use Addthis in the sidebar of your wordpress.com blog? If yes, then chances are you might be using it in a way that is not user-friendly. Check out this post to be sure:

When I type in the bookmarklet into Text Edit, then save as html, there is no hyperlink “add this” that shows up when I open it in Firefox. Why?
Thanks!

Dear everybody who had problem with this code:
Plain quotes were being displayed as curly quotes in the code because of ms word (wp does not allow me to upload notepad files) and the curly quotes caused the problem. I should have figured it out long ago, but I didn’t dare enter the world of code examination, cos i’m not a coder really. This code is a result of curious fiddling. So please accept my heartiest apologies.

I have uploaded the code that works. Please test it and see if you have any problem.

Thank you

and dear wordpress, please allow us to upload .txt files.. Sometimes it is better to link to a code file, than to showcase it directly in the post via shortcodes.
