The easiest way to insert “email post” and social bookmarking options under wordpress.com blog posts

ADDTOANY is a service that will allow you to offer both “email post” and social bookmarking options under your wordpress.com blog posts.

:!: An even easier method is available than the one listed below. Read how you can create social bookmarking and email post options in just one click for wordpress.com blog posts!

When you choose a button and get it coded (we will get to that in a while!), the visitor is taken to a page that shows a list, like the one below:

Addtoany offers "email a friend" and tons of social bookmarking options for wordpress.com blog posts

Now is the time to learn how to code the button.
Visit Get the button page in the Addtoany website.

Now select the options as shown below:

Before you can use the button, you have to publish a post first.

A few things to remember

  • You have to choose the Share/Save/Bookmark widget, and NOT the Subscribe widget.
  • You can choose any button style you like.
  • You should copy and paste the page title in the “Page name” field, although it is optional.
  • You must copy the post title and NOT blog title from the address bar of your blog and paste it in the “Page url” field.
  • You can choose any language from the list. To do that, first click the link “More options” next to the button that says “Get the button”.
  • You can choose the number of services you want in the list.
  • Please check the no-script (no drop-down menu option) – or else the button will NOT work in a wordpress.com blog.
  • Do NOT choose the option “Menu colors”, because then your button will not work in your wordpress.com blog.
  • When everything is taken care of, click the button that says “Get the button” and copy the code produced.
  • Come back to the edit mode of the post where you have to put the button and paste it using the HTML editor, and NOT the visual editor.
  • Update the post and enjoy the new button! :D
  • If you are going to use Addtoany, consider bookmarking the Get the button page (link already given in this post before). When you want to use it, just open a new tab and access that page from your bookmarks.

It is possible to use Addtoany in other blogging platforms other than wp.com – but that’s beyond the scope of this article.

How to use Addthis to offer “email post” and social bookmarking options for wordpress.com

ADDTHIS is probably the most discussed method of social bookmarking in wordpress.dot.com forums. Until now, no Addthis code worked for wordpress.com blogs that created “email post” options as well as social bookmarking options. I worked out a bookmarklet that works perfectly for wordpressdotcom blogs, but it dodn’t produce an “email post” option.

If other blogs can have it, why can’t we wordpressdotcommers? :D

Addthis creates both email post and social bookmarking options for wordpress.com blogs!

Addthis creates both email post and social bookmarking options for wordpress.com blogs!

I approached the Addthis forum for a solution and they have corrected the Addthis bookmarklet I created before. You can access the latter bookmarklet at Addthis forum.

If you don’t know how to create social bookmarking lists for your wordpress.com blogs using the bookmarklet, just read this Addthis tutorial for wordpress.com blogs. Follow the instructions on that post, but DON’T download the bookmarklet offered there. Just use the bookmarklet given at the Addthis forum.

Why not click the button below to see that it actually does include the “email post” link as well as social bookmarking options? :D

So, why is it better? Because the previous code does not include “email post” options. Click the button below (created with the previous bookmarklet) and see for yourself!
