Create social bookmarking links for wordpress.com blog posts using FoxReplace

First thing first

Install FoxReplace in your Firefox browser.
If you do not use Firefox download it now!

After you install FoxReplace, restart Firefox to activate FoxReplace. Now you are ready for the step-by-step instruction about how to use the code you copied from the bookmarked url to generate sharing links for individual blog posts on wordpress.com.

Step-by-step instruction

1. Create a new post in your wordpress.com blog. Do NOT leave the admin view of your post. View the published post in a new tab.

2. Open another tab and launch the bookmarked post where the codes you need are available. Copy the codes.

3. Now go back to the tab that has admin view of your new post.

4. Paste the copied code under your new post. Now, look carefully, at the very end of the codes you will see two phrases, PASTE-POST-TITLE and PASTE-POST-URL
(In some codes, you will only see PASTE-POST-URL and not PASTE-POST-TITLE – that is absolutely alright!)

5. Press shift + f2. The FoxReplace toolbar will be available in the bottom of your browser.

Now press the Replace button in your FoxReplace toolbar.

Paste PASTE-POST-URL in the Replace field of the FoxReplace Toolbar (make sure that the field is blank before you paste anything). Now visit the published view of your blog post and copy the post url from the address bar. Go back to the tab that has admin view of your blog post and paste it in the with field of FoxReplace (make sure that the field is blank before you paste anything). IMPORTANT NOTICE
:!: Bookmark this post (ctrl + D) in your Firefox or bookmark it online for future reference. You will need to copy the appropriate Facebook code given here each time you want a Facebook Like button in a post. There’s no way to fully automate the process for wordpress.com because of limitations in wordpress.com. Sorry.

To learn how you can use the code above, please visit the following link.
Create social bookmarking links for wordpress.com blog posts using FoxReplace

A few words
1. This method is for having Facebook Like button for wordpress.com (and other sites where it is not possible to have the Facebook Like button) only.

2. There’s no way to show Live Updates from Facebook in your post itself (because of wordpress.com limitations). But the data is available in a blank page when you click the Facebook Like button in your blog post. So, it looks like the button is integrated in your OWN blog and not in some external Third-party website.

To see an example, please click the button below.

Important Information
The new wordpress.com sharing feature made available after this post had been written allows you to add a Facebook Like button under posts automatically.

How to offer speech-version of your blog post to your readers

How to allow your reader to read only text of your blog post

When reading is the prime objective, images can distract. So, if your reader only wants to read your blog, and not see images, you can help her/him to do so! The images in the header, footer side bar area and main blog post will not show and so the web page can be easily read.

Note: This tip also applies to bloggers at wordpress.com! :D

All you have to do is use Firefox and add the Google Text-Only Cache Bookmarklet to your Bookmarks Toolbar.

Please visit the following link to get the bookmarklet.

Now when you write a new post, write the words Read text only under the main post. Publish the new post and view it in a new tab. Now stay in the tab and click the new bookmarklet from your Bookmarks Toolbar (it says “text cache”) .

Let the page reload and voila! What do you see?
A text-only version of your blog post! :D

Copy the url from the address bar. go to the tab that has admin view of your post and link the words Read text only to the url. Update the page. Now go to the tab that shows your blog post and reload it.

Click the text link Read text only and just read, read, read! :D
:!: It takes some time for Google to “cache” a web page. So, don’t despair if the link doesn’t yield results instantly.

Click the text link below to read text-only version of this page.
Read text only

Bonus tip:
If you want to read just text from any web page, you can launch the bookmarklet to read just text. Alternately you can add the Readability bookmarklet, which gives you some cutomization options for your text-only page layout! :D

How to automatically display recent posts of a specific tag in your wordpress side bar

Sometimes we need to give special exposure to posts posted in a specific tag. One way of doing it is by allotting the side bar area. The side bar area is visible at all times (unless you have changed your theme settings) and we are gonna take advantage of the visibility.

Choose a tag that covers the posts you want to give special exposure to. Now access the tag by using the tag cloud widget and copy the tag page url.

For example my chosen tag is “Free web” and the tag url is:

http://shongjog.wordpress.com/tag/free-web/

Now go to your widget page and activate an RSS widget and paste the url in the appropriate field.

Tag-rss-for-for-wordpress

Make the necessary changes and save!

Here is how my recent posts in the tag “Free web” look like in the side bar after doing the job.

Note: Also works for categories.

Pretty neat, eh? :D

How to have featured tags along with an icon and tag rss options in a wordpress sidebar

Lookie! My new featured tags in the sidebar! :D

I’ve been meaning to do this for a long time because navigation in this blog is really difficult (sigh, I never got around to do the job properly) and I had fascination for tags that also show icons in their left in the sidebar of several blogs. Like, I am a visual person. Icons make me happy.

Sadly, wordpress.com blogs don’t generate tag lists that have icons also. But that didn’t deter me from being cool!

I am going to share the how-to with you because it’s kind of lonely being cool alone…..

Okay, first thing first. You have to pick just a small number of tags – three is minimum, five is ideal, ten is maximum – that all your posts can be divided into. Try not to enter more than two tags for a single post. You wouldn’t want to bore your reader with recurring posts again and again. Go to your posts page and check the tags of your posts. Make sure each of your posts fall into at least ONE basic tag from your list of chosen tags. If any post is missing a tag, press quickedit and enter the tag in the tag field.

When you are done adding proper tags to your posts, go to the widget area of your blog and add the Tag Cloud widget if you do not already have one showing. (You can always remove it again once the job is finished).

Pick the chosen tags from the tag cloud. Right-click on a chosen tag and copy the link location.

Create a new post.

write the tag name. Now link it to its tag page by pasting the copied link in the link tab. If you want a description to hover over the tag when the cursor is on it, then put the title tags. repeat this process for all the chosen tags. Make sure you put a break tag in between each tag, you will need it later.

Now search the web for free icons and select the icons you need to represent your tags. Save the images in your computer and upload them one by one in the post.

When you paste an icon always paste it on the left of the corresponding tag code. Doing it from the beginning is better than making a mistake later and get code-fright.

If you want rss options for the tags then hop over to Juan’s blog, he has explained very well why you might need rss for tags and how you can have them.

When all the code is done, copy the code and paste it in Text widget.

Here are the contents of my code, just in case an example helps you more.

<strong>Subscribe to a tag and don't miss a post again!</strong>
