How to use the wordpress Reblog option to have a “Featured Post” section in your blog’s sidebar

Creative use of wordpress Reblog button #2

The sidebar is a an expensive blog real estate and here is a way you can have a “Featured post” section in your blog’s sidebar. Having a “Featured post” in your sidebar gives your best posts the best chance of being accessible.

The example below is an image of a Featured post in my sidebar, created using WordPress Reblog!

http://shongjog.wordpress.com/2010/06/04/how-to-use-the-wordpress-reblog-option-to-have-a-featured-post-section-in-your-blogs-sidebar/

Here is what you have to do…

Log into your account using Firefox and view a blog post that you want to be featured in the sidebar. Make sure the address bar of your browser is populated with the post url and not the blog url or else “Like” won’t show up. “Like” the post and “Reblog this post” it.

When the page finishes loading, spot the portion that is going to be reblogged. Select it, right-click it and choose “View selection source”. A new window with the selected code will be open. Copy (ctrl+c) the code.

Go to your blog admin and choose Appearances>widgets. Choose an unused “text widget” from the available widgets and paste the code in the body part of the widget. For the title of widget, write Featured Post. Save the widget and view your blog.

Admire your new “Featured post” section! :D

Bonus tip # 1

Do change the post every now and then (a regular schedule is best) to make it interesting to your viewers.

Bonus tip # 2

Sometimes reblogs generated automatically by wp.com are too big for the sidebars (I mean, they weren’t really meant for sidebars!). So shorten it and make it compact.

Bonus tip # 3

If you are using posts that have images, make sure the first one is good enough. The automatically generated reblogs most of the time pick only the first image.

Bonus tip # 4

Make sure the introduction of your post is intriguing enough, because it is going to be the teaser.
