How to use Cooliris to showcase your photography in a wordpress.com blog

Three cheers for three wordpress.com bloggers!

The scenario
Trevor expressed his disappointment in the wp.com forums – he wanted to use cooliris in his wordpress.com blog and there seemed to be no way to do so.

hallluke offers a way to add it in a wordpress.com blog.

Panos is the genius that originally figured out the solution provided by Hallluke.

And just look how cool cooliris is! :D

Amazing isn’t it? Especially considering the fact that there was no way to have it in a wordpress.com blog until very recently.

So, if you want to showcase your photography the cooliris way, just hop over to Cooliris Express and create your own 3D photo wall.

You can set Cooliris to show pictures from a user’s photo stream, from a group’s photo pool, matching search terms, with certain tags. You can select your content from Flickr, Picassa, Youtube orFacebook. The Media Rss option will not work in wordpress.com.

How to embed cooliris in wordpress.com

Posting a 3D wall on your site is as easy as 1-2-3.

Cooliris Express is a Flash®-based version of the Cooliris Wall you can embed into your site for all visitors to enjoy. Create your own Wall with our online builder in three simple steps:

Select content
1. Choose from Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, YouTube, or any Media RSS feed.

Customize
2. Change the appearance, number of rows, title, and more.

Publish
3. Post to Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, WordPress, or your website.

From Cooliris.

Create a 3D photo wall

The problem is, the embed code given by Cooliris is not wordpress.com-friendly. So, just change it the gigya src way and have a Cooliris photo wall in your blog in no time at all.

If you need help modifying the embed code just ask Panos. (Link given on top of page).

And if you want to put some other Flash stuff in a blog post or the side bar of your wordpress.com blog, just hop over to Panos’ blog again and browse category: Gigya src. He can probably save the day.

How to create rainbow text instantly online

Did you know that you can create rainbow text almost instantly online?

Rainbow text

Note: Works also in wordpress.com blogs!

The code that was used to produce the colourful text is this:

<font face="Lucida Calligraphy" size="10">
<b><font color="blue">R</font><font color="aqua">a</font><font color="lime">i</font><font color="lime">n</font><font color="fuchsia">b</font><font color="fuchsia">o</font><font color="gold">w</font><font color="gold"> </font><font color="blue">t</font><font color="aqua">e</font><font color="lime">x</font><font color="lime">t</font></b></font>

Just hop over to Rainbow Text Maker (HTML Generator), write your text and choose the font colours.

When you are done, generate the code and paste the code in a blog post (using the HTML editor) or if you want to have it in your side bar, just use a text widget!

:!: Do not use rainbow text extensively. It can produce nausea to your viewer.
 If used creatively, the rainbow text can be used to create focus on something that requires special attention!

Get colourful in your writings!

How to create blinking text online instantly

Did you know?

Blinking text can be created online instantly!

Note: Also works in wordpress.com blogs!

Example text

What you see above is text, and not an image! Don’t believe me? Try to select the text with your mouse. You will be able to it. On the other hand, if you try to do the “Save image as” trick, no image will be saved. Because it is just text and not image!

The code that was used to produce the blinking text is this:

<a style="color:#b5acb5;font-size:50px;font-family:Comic Sans MS;text-decoration:blink;" title="create blinking text online instantly with css" href="http://www.myspacegens.com/handler.php?gen=link" target="_self">Example text</a>

It was done with css. No problem if you don’t know css. :D

Just hop over to Link Generator and write your text. You can choose the font, font size and font colour. You can even link the text to a url and choose whether to open the link in the same window or a new window.

:!: Just remember two things, in order to make blinking text, you have to choose text link (and not image link) for Link Type and you have to choose blink for Text Decoration.

When you are finished they give you a code which you can paste in a post using the HTML editor or you can have it in the side bar using a text widget.

 It can be used to focus on something that needs attention.

Have fun!

WordPress pranks – prank no. 4

WordPress support is the place we turn to when we have a problem or a confusion or a question and it is expected that you will always find the correct information there, isn’t it! Well, it does give you right answers most of the time, but occassionally it also likes to play pranks.

What Support says about using Addthis in a wordpress.com blog post:

You can also add the button to individual posts on your blog, which will enable readers to share specific content/articles. To do this, simply paste the code that you obtained from step #5 above into the HTML view of your editor.

So, I did what the instructions told me to do and I got the button below:

Bookmark and Share

So, what does this button do?
When clicked, this button takes me to an Addthis page with lots of social bookmarking options. Cool!

Addthis for wordpress.com

But wait!

Look very carefully. The blog post title is missing from the page! :(
What does that mean? To know that, let’s try to share a post via Delicious.
Sharing to Delicious via Addthis

What do you see? The URL field and TITLE field are both populated with the blog post url! Ideally speaking, the TITLE field should be populated with the blog post title, not the blog post url!

And this is not the only fault!

Look at the image above. This is what I get if I click the Addthis button before I click the post title first.

What does it mean?
It means, if your blog has more than one posts and your blog is set to show full posts, then the unwary viewer will click the Addthis button while still on the home page. Addthis generates links for the url present in the address bar. So, if a viewer wants to share a particular blog post, (s)he won’t be able to do that. (S)he will end up sharing the blog url and that too without the blog title!

And there’re even more surprises shocks ahead.

Say your viewer got to an article by clicking a category. This post is posted in the catagory Addthis. Now if your blog is set to show more than one posts, the user will end up sharing the url for that category, and not the blog post itself!
See the image below:

My verdict
The Addthis code is simply not good enough to use as it is for sharing sites that require both the blog post title and the blog post url (there are many such sites besides delicious, I used only delicious to illustrate the screenshots).

Now let’s try to use the Addthis button below and see what it does:

Add this anywhere

This button takes the reader to an Addthis page, like before, and the reader can choose a sharing site to share the post.
Addthis for wordpress.com blog posts

Now, look carefully, this Addthis page shows not only the blog post url, but also the blog post title! :D
That means, when I try to save this post in Delicious, I am able to share my post properly, with the blog post title!

Sharing a wordpress.com post to delicious via the one-click Addthis button

The URL field is populated with the url of the blog post and the TITLE field is populated with the blog post title – as it should be.

So where can you get the code for Addthis button that will work properly in a wordress.com blog post?
Just hop over to this post to find it!

How to add Facebook Likebox in a wordpress.com blog – part 1

Post update
Jan, 20, 2011

It is now possible to add a Facebook Likebox that is visible right in a wordpress.com blog.
Learn the new trick…
How to add a Facebook Likebox in a wordpress.com blog – part 2

This post assumes that you have already created your Likebox and now you are trying to figure out a way to post it in your wordpress.com blog.

This post also assumes that you use Firefox.

When you create a Like box you will be able to see it in the right side of the page.

Download this nifty little Firefox extension – Fireshot.

Now press ctrl+alt+z in your keyboard.

This keyboard shortcut will use Fireshot to create a screenshot of the whole page. Now carefully crop only the portion of the Likebox. Save the image and upload it in a new post. Now get the link of your blog’s Facebook page and link the image to that url.
Save this post as draft for future reference.

Copy the whole code from the HTML editor. Go to your blog’s widgets page and add an unused text widget.
Paste the code in the text widget and save changes.

View your blog. If you did everything as per the instructions, you should see the image of Facebook Likebox in your sidebar. Since it is linked to the Facebook page of your blog, the reader who clicks the image will go there and from there (s)he can “like” it.

Facebook Likebox for wordpress.com

If the image is too big for your side bar, you can put the image in a box with scrollbox to save screen space.

:!: There’s no way to have updated info in this method. To have updated info, you must change the image from time to time.

This is only a workaround for wordpress.com. It’s not possible to make it work completely the way it is supposed to work, because of limitations imposed on us by wordpress.com about what kind of code we can put in our blogs.

Another alternate way
Just use a text link or an image link that links to your Fan page. Then you don’t have to update the information again and again.

See this image I spotted at Dornob. It’s plain, simple and makes its point.

Always remember, the side bar is an important space in your blog. I am not sure that the Facebook Likebox is one of the most important things to allot so much space for! :D
