How to add a Google Custom Search engine to a wordpress.com blog

Visit Google and Create your own Custom Search Engine.

Instructions

1. Creating your Google Custom Search Engine

In this phase, you have to describe your future search engine and define it. Make sure you add just the url of your site in the “Sites to search” field. Select the free edition, agree to the “Terms and conditions” and click “Next”.

Choose how your search engine will look.

Then they give you a big code that you have to paste in your blog.

:!: But wait!

That code is no good for a wordpress.com blog – it will be stripped off immediately by wordpress. So leave this page here.

Go to manage your existing search engines and click the name of the search engine you have just created.

A new page will open up that has your newly created Google Custom Search engine. Leave this page open for a while.

Adding the Google Custom Search Engine to your wordpress.com blog

The only way we can have a GCE is by linking to it. At best, we can try to make it look genuine.

Just copy the below and paste it in a text widget.

Go to the page that has your Google Custom Search Engine and copy the url from the address bar of your browser.

Now go back to the code in the text widget and find the bit PASTE-URL-HERE. Select it completely and replace it with the url you have copied.

Save changes and view your blog.

You should now see a Google Custom Search Engine just like the one in the side bar of this blog!
