Visit Google and Create your own Custom Search Engine.
Instructions
1. Creating your Google Custom Search Engine
In this phase, you have to describe your future search engine and define it. Make sure you add just the url of your site in the “Sites to search” field. Select the free edition, agree to the “Terms and conditions” and click “Next”.
Choose how your search engine will look.
Then they give you a big code that you have to paste in your blog.
But wait!
That code is no good for a wordpress.com blog – it will be stripped off immediately by wordpress. So leave this page here.
Go to manage your existing search engines and click the name of the search engine you have just created.
A new page will open up that has your newly created Google Custom Search engine. Leave this page open for a while.
Adding the Google Custom Search Engine to your wordpress.com blog
The only way we can have a GCE is by linking to it. At best, we can try to make it look genuine.
Just copy the below and paste it in a text widget.
Go to the page that has your Google Custom Search Engine and copy the url from the address bar of your browser.
Now go back to the code in the text widget and find the bit PASTE-URL-HERE. Select it completely and replace it with the url you have copied.
Save changes and view your blog.
You should now see a Google Custom Search Engine just like the one in the side bar of this blog!

wow thanks for this useful info I’d love to try this.
You are AMAZING! Thank you so much, I love it, I never knew such a custom feature was available. You have the BEST blog, I love your tips!
Hi Stacey!
You are very welcome. If you need more things that you can’t figure out how for your wordpress .com blog, let me know. I will try to help!
wow thanks for this useful info I’d love to try this.
good
One thing I’m not clear on, do I need a google account to do this? I deleted my account over there about a year ago.
Hi Bob,
Yes, you do need a Google account. You can always create another one for free any time!
I don’t see a google custum search in the sidebar of this blog. The heading that says search for something specific is a list of categories.
Thanks for leeting me know. Looks like my search engine is not visible enough.
Do you see something like this in the side bar? It’s somewhere above the list you have mentioned.

No, unless the text wiget doesn’t have a title. Also, isn’t the search box supposed to be right on the page?
Another question, why do you stil have the wp search wiget on here?
Hi again,
Well, The GCS will appear wherever you put it – in a page or post or sidebar or footer.
As for me still having the wp.com search box, I can’t get rid of it in my theme (inove) without paying for the css upgrade. That’s an inove theme limitation.
Ok, fine. I’ll just have to play around with it on my own site. As for the theme, that’s why I didn’t want to switch themes. Did you happen to see my post about global tags and local ones on wordpress thoughts?
Sometimes switching themes helps. I am with inove now cos I like the fact that I can put up stuff in the form of a welcome message – right on top.
But I’d say its better to stick to one theme, cos it helps a blog gain (visual) identity. I will go nuts if sites I use regularly (Google, Friendfeed, WordPress etc) change their looks, layouts and link positions every now and then!
I have read your post on tags and I have really enjoyed it. I also believe that it is one of the biggets limitations of wordpress. I do appreciate the we-are-all-one-big-wordpress-family type of philosophy behind it, but something else could be done to promote that. Putting “Uncategorized” under the posts is a great idea. I am also thinking of putting up a notice in the side bar – something that will warn visitors that if they click a tag under a post, they will be thrown out of my blog.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one. Hopefully I’ll get some other comments. As to your theme, you actually have the only theme that allows tags to go local without the payed CSS upgrade.
No, you are not the only one. You will find a lot of grievances in the forums concerning this.
Um… my theme doesn’t show local tags/cats under the post, they lead to wordpress global tag pages.
But my theme allows me to hide the tags and cats. Even if you hide tags and cats, the cats will show up above the post title when the post title is clicked. That is why I use only tags now (I have converted all my cats to tags) now. So, now there are no global tags in my blog now!
Meanwhile, I am trying to figure out a comfortable way of linking to my own tags under the post in some way, without having to spend money. I do know several ways, but I am not satisfied with one enough to be used on a regular basis.
Do tell me if that option works!
Thanks. This adds a professional touch to my site!
You are most welcome!
I’m a WordPress.com newbie and am pulling my hair out (I’m bald) trying to figure out this:
How can I integrate a search form on an external website that will search my WordPress.com blog – including all archived posts?
I know this has to be possible, I’m just going crazy trying to figure it out!
Many, many, MANY thanks for any assistance you can provide.
Bob
Where is the external site? Is it another blog at wordpress.com? If not, does it allow javascript?
The site is a stand-alone (non-WordPress blog) site, and yes, I can run javascript on it. Many thanks for replying so fast.
Bob
Sorry for being late this time! Have you been able to create your Google Custom Search for your blog?
I f so, you need to copy the javascript they give you and paste it in your other site. That’s it!
THAT WORKED! You rock. Many thanks!
Bob
Hi again!
You are always welcome and thanks for letting me know! I am happy to be of service.
This may be the best (and coolest) advice I’ve ever received on these here internets. It worked like a charm and solves an enormous problem with my site, which I’m using more as an information management system than a blog.
Thank you.
And this is certainly one of the best comments in my blog!
I am glad that the post has helped you and I really appreciate the fact that you didn’t forget to thank me!
