How to create a customizable Tag Cloud for wordpress.com blogs (non-geek version!)

29 03 2008

CREATE your Tag Cloud for your wordpress.com blog and customize it almost instantly. No special skill is required. But you do need Firefox.

In order to have a customizable Tag Cloud, your first job is to complete all the first ten steps as explained in my previous post.

Now while you are still in MS Word customize the hierarchy and or colour of the tags as you please.

Here are some examples. Feel free to feel inspired by these or think up something on your own! I haven’t explored with different fonts. You might try different fonts if you like. But it is not advisable to change the font size, if you want to retain the relationship among the tags. Also you might want to edit out some tags if you are looking for a concise look and create a Top Tgas/Top Categories page instead!

Example no. 1
This is the default Tag Cloud as it appears without any change. How it will look in your blog depends on the theme of your blog.

Done picking a suitable style? Good, now please finish the steps 11 to 16 as stated in my previous post.

Enjoy your shiny new Tag Cloud in all its customized glory! :D

***

As mentioned in my previous post, this will work for Category Cloud also, please read that post for more information.

 The default Tag Cloud widget does not allow you to customize the tags in any way. If you want to customize the look of your Tag Cloud in the side bar, simply paste the Tag Cloud created in the process mentioned in this post and paste the code in a text widget. Don’t forget to save changes! :D

How to “automatically” generate links from text online

16 10 2007

If you are not too comfortable with HTML coding or if you like automatic coding once in a while (like me :D ) then here is a site that makes the job of turning text into links a cakewalk.

Link Magic will enable you not only to generate links from text, but also format the text. You can change the font size, change font weight (normal or bold), font style (normal or italic), the font face, the font colour and text decoration (none, underline, overline, line through) . You can also specify the window target as top/blank/new.

There is even a pop-up color chart to assist you to figure out the HTML colour codes!

Linkmagic

What I miss is having a drop-down menu for font face. It’s not like I have memorised the names of all the websafe font faces!

WordPress.com bloggers

We are better off formatting our text and linking them using our handy blog editor.

However, Link Magic can prove to be helpful when you are not in your own blog, but say in another blog and you want to link to something in a comment. A word of caution though, in that case you might need to strip the formatting codes, as comment boxes of different themes allow different tags.

Now there can be no excuse for absent-minded me for miscoding a link in a comment in someone else’s blog! :D

Artbreak – a great site for artists and (wordpress.com) bloggers

10 10 2007

For artists

Artbreak is great for you if you wanna share and sell your art online!
Your art can also be tagged for better searchability. The visitors can click a button that says “I like”, which shows how many votes you get in this way. Also you can get comments from your visitors. Once you have opened your account, you can invite your friends to come over! Registered users can send you a message, add your work to their favourites and also add you as a friend.

Hmmm, I wonder why they don’t have any social bookmarking option for users to bookmark artists’s works? At least a simple Addthis (like the one they have to promote their own homepage!) or a Socialmarker button would do! Maybe if we all pour in this suggestion, they will get around to doing it. :D

***

For bloggers

Artbreak is also a great resource for finding contemporary artworks for your blogs. We bloggers reap the benefit as there is a code for sharing any image!

Best of all, some of the sharing codes are in HTML, so that means wordpress.com bloggers can tag along.

Below is a favourite of mine from artbreak.

You can navigate:

Recently Popular
Most Viewed
Most Liked
Most Complimented
Most Recent
Top Favorites
Tag Cloud
Random

Also there is a search box for your, I mean our, convenience! :D

How to figure out the width and height of your images instantly

25 09 2007

If you need to know the dimensions (width and height) of your image instantly, here is a way to do so online.

Cellsea instantly provides the information once you upload your image. You can upload your image from your computer or paste the image url if it is already online. After you press “go”, you are taken to a page where you see the uploaded image and most importantly, right under the tabs in the right there’s the information of image dimensions.

You only need the information marked within the red boundary. And in case you are doing it for the first time, w stands for image width and h stands for image height!

Of course you can use cellservice for other purposes, but that is beyond the scope of this post.

Although it is possible to resize images using cellservice or some other program, it is good to know that there’s an “automatic” way of doing it once you know the width and height of your image. Doing it automatically means you won’t have to resize and upload an image every time you need a differently sized version of the same image.

Please read this post to figure out how you can automatically resize an image. Highly recommended if you have don’t wanna resize and upload your images every time you change the theme of your wordpress.com blog.
