Beware of the image sharing site Picoodle!

17 10 2007

Picoodle has enough to lure the image-hungry web surfers, especially those who want to share their images online and those who are looking for images for their site/blog. But let’s see what it really is.

Imagicians
You don’t even have to be a member to be able to upload images. And you can get your images reized then and there and include image tags. You can also specify your image as private. Furthermore, the reader has the option to choose from ten social bookmarking sites to bookmark your images.

Website/blog owners
You can search for a keyword and see if you like what you get!

friends rock, Image Hosting

A word of caution
If you are like me, you probably skip the TERMS AND CONDITIONS or FAQ of most sites. But it would be a mistake if you do so here! For your convenience, I have copied the entire FAQ for you to judge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is your service truly free?

Yes! We offer completely free image hosting! We intend to offer paid accounts with greater benefits in the future.

How much bandwidth do my images get?

Bandwidth is unlimited for thumbnailed images! Use as much as you want! Hotlinked images are currently allowed 600 MB per day, but you can get more when people click on your image!

What is the maximum size for uploaded images?

Images must be less than 2 MB. Images larger than 2000 pixels in any dimension will be resized.

How long are images kept on your site?

We’ll keep your images as long as people are looking at them! If they are not accessed for more than 100 days they may be deleted.

How much disk space do I get for images?

Upload as many as you want! Your storage space is unlimited.

Should I keep a backup of my images on my hard drive?

Of course! Though we keep backups of all images uploaded to our site, accidents do happen so you should keep a copy.

PicOodle! – FAQ

Second thoughts
I don’t know about you, but I am not gonna depend heavily on this site either as an artist or as a blogger! :( If I use it at all, it will be as an artist, as an extra bit of exposure that I could live without. As for blogging, hmmm, as these images are free for sharing, I wonder if it would not be OK if I uploaded an image elsewhere? After all, I can’t afford to have it vanish from my blog just because it’s not popular anymore!

What is your verdict?

If you click any of the links above, you will be able to bookmark this post. Some of the services are defunct though!

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Choose which services you need
  2. Choose “Text Links”, instead of drop-down menus, as wordpress.com does not allow javascript, necessary for drop-downs to work.
  3. Choose code type – choose “For a static page”, not “Blog specific”. (Static Page - Creates one set of links for one single page.
Blog Specific – These links tie directly into WordPress, Blogger, MovableType or Textpattern blogs and will re-generate for every post.)
  4. Enter url and title of your blog post
  5. Choose seperators (this will help you configure whether you want the icons one under the other or in a row and if in a row how much space should be between each link)
  6. Copy the whole code
  7. Paste under your blog post
  8. Save, view and enjoy!

It is perfect if you prefer to have text links instead of images. For example, in my future art blog, I will probably use the text links.

Further Readings

You can get the same thing done and in the same process by using ifeedreaders also.

What if you want to have the visual icons?

In case you crave for the icons – gosh, don’t they just look beautiful? – then you will have to work a bit more. You will need to carefully select the appropriate code and link it to the representative icon. Or better still, try this – you can choose from as many as 50 social bookmarking options.

Alternately, if you are satisfied with a select few services (eleven in total and very good ones at that!) try this method . It’s basically a two-click process and very easy!

Keotag automatically generates tags – for Technorati, other search engines and social bookmarking sites

15 09 2007

www.keotag.com is a Godsend for wordpress .com bloggers. This site will automatically generate all the tags you could wish for and even more! And that too in two easy steps!

First of all, you have to enter a word and in the second step choose Technorati or some other seacrh engine and the tag for that site will be automatically generated!

Same for social bookmarking sites also! You can automatically generate codes for blinklist, delicious, furl, yahoo, digg, rojo, shadows and netvous. Hmmm, not bad. But I can’t help wishing there were more options!
All you have to do is copy the HTML and paste it where you want it!

So I am sorry you people had to go thru’ the agony of the slightly more difficult version I did a while ago. What can I say, um, does “sorry” sound good enough? Oops, I guess I said it already, huh! :D

Updated after Lorelle’s comment on this post
Although inserting Technorati tags under each post might drive traffic away from your post, there is still a very good reason to do it. Simply put, it works both ways! That means, if someone searches for a keyword at Technorati, and if your article is listed there, more visitors can land on your blog from there! And putting those tags enables that! IMO, there’s no minus point in letting readers find something else somewhere else via your post, cos they have done visiting and hitting your post first – ah, stat stat stat! But when a reader does come to your post from somewhere else, that’s lovely!
